The gates of the Schlachthof in Wiesbaden reopened on January 6th this year for the first time after the winter break.

And for this concert, the glam rock band Kissin’ Dynamite was the headliner. But they didn’t come alone, they had three other bands with them in their suitcase. We’re talking about League of Distortion, Formosa and Dynazty.

One or the other reader of this page should already know Dynazty, because I saw them at a concert in Weinheim last April.

Shortly before seven the evening started with League of Distortion. This is still a relatively new band. Founded in 2020 by Anna Brunner, who may sound familiar to some because of the symphonic metal band Exit Eden, and Jim Müller, guitarist for today’s headliner. It was immediately noticeable that he wasn’t on the stage, but was represented by Olli Sattler. The reason for this is not because he was ill, but because he wanted to concentrate fully on his performance with Kissin’ Dynamite.

There was also a replacement on bass. But enough of the trappings, the concert itself is more important. As a first band, you traditionally don’t have that much time, which is why Anna held back with the many speeches and the band showed what they were made of and that it is definitely worth following their path. It was was good Modern Metal, where Anna was able to shine with her clear vocals, while the somewhat heavier passages unfortunately came across as a bit weak. But the 25 minute show was definitely fun, both for the band and the fans.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] After a fairly short conversion phase, Formosa surprised everyone by coming onto the stage with the hall lights still fully on and just getting started. For us photographers, this led to an almost panic-stricken bustle to get into the ditch and miss as little as possible. What followed was 30 minutes of hard, honest hard rock, with a lot of movement on stage, a singer who was ashamed of nothing and always attracted attention with his clear dance interludes. The band itself says about their performances: “‘Hard and Heavy’, fast, very slow, sexy, with kisses on the neck, oaths of love and all the trimmings.” I can second that, it’s a pretty good description of what was offered on stage. Of course, the most famous song Fuck up your Liver couldn’t be missing, and with Manic Lover, Nik even wore a kind of feather coat, which gave the whole thing a special touch.

Setlist Formosa:

Living on a Blade

Dynamite

Masquerade

Fuck up your Liver

Katlilla

Rolling High

Light it up

Manic Lover

Bad Boys

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] Much time wasn’t wasted between Formosa and Dynazty either, so viewers were hardly given a breather. At 20:15 the lights went out again and the Dynazty intro played.

It started with two songs from the 2018 album Firesign. A slightly heavier, less melodic song, followed by one with synths. Just to show how varied the band can be. Of course, something new was also played, with three songs from the current album. Including the ballad Yours, which gave some viewers goosebumps. Then there was something that I now see less and less at concerts, a classic drum solo by Georg. He was able to really show what he could do for a few minutes. It was very impressive and delighted the fans present. After Presence of Mind came the band’s most famous song by far, Heartless Madness (25 million streams on Spotify, Presence of Mind as the 2nd most streamed song has just under 9 million). At first only the first two notes of the song played and then nothing came, but that was enough for some, including me, to recognize it immediately. And it was celebrated. As in Weinheim, the audience was involved. First everyone was allowed to sing a classic “Oooooooooo Heartless Madness” before the hall was divided into left and right to see which side is louder. As is so often the case, it ended in a draw before everyone was allowed to take part again. Before they played the last song, The Human Paradox, they briefly left the stage while the song’s intro music was playing. It was actually clear that there was another song to come, and yet many viewers shouted “encore, encore”, which shows how well Dynazty was able to convince. The 50 minutes of playing time flew by and the band thanked the fans for their support with several bows.

Setlist Dynazty:

In the Arms of a Devil

Firesign

Natural Born Killer

Waterfall

Yours

Power of Will

Drum Solo

Presence of Mind

Heartless Madness

The Human Paradox

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] What followed was a major removal of tarps, blankets and the like to reveal the setup for Kissin’ Dynamite, complete with podium, stairs and a raised drum kit. Otherwise not much had to be dismantled or rebuilt, only the drums used by all three bands. Nevertheless, it took a while until the music stopped at 9:30 p.m., the hall lights went out, we photographers were let into the ditch and a murmur went through the hall. It was done. The intro music was playing, you couldn’t see anything on the stage and when the lights came on they were all already there, on top of the built-up platform and the show started with No one dies a Virgin. The songs then continued on the same theme, with a lot of show, fun interludes by the band and interaction with the audience.

Be it because Hannes held his microphone stand with the microphone in front of the audience, or because the audience was asked to clap. There were also the choreographed movements of the band members known from classic 80’s glam rock/metal, as well as a lot of nonsense from them. But there was also an emotional moment. The fans, who know the band better, knew what was coming when the piano was pushed onto the stage, but Hannes still talked more about it because he thinks the topic is important. It’s about the fact that he wasn’t doing well mentally in 2019, despite the band’s success and he asked himself the question of quitting. But he got a lot of support from his band and once again emphasized that they aren’t just his best friends, they’re like brothers to him.

During this time, Scars was born, which wasn’t originally intended to be a Kissin’ Dynamite song, but the rest of the musicians immediately said that this song belongs on the record. What followed was a wonderful setting of those emotions. But that wasn’t the only extra moment worth noting. The obvious thing for Ecstasy was that they were touring with the League of Distortion. Anna came on stage to perform her duet from the Ecstasy album with Hannes live. And it was a worthwhile experience. Sure, there were a lot of songs that were known, since some of them are played a lot by Radio Bob, a local rock radio station, but with Six Feet Under the fans were particularly sure of the lyrics. This is the band’s most successful song in terms of Spotify streams. At the end there was an encore of two songs, with the concert ending around 11 p.m. After the obligatory crowd photo, picks, sticks and set lists were handed out to the audience and a fitting farewell was given. In the end it was a worthwhile evening that offered a total of 4 hours of energy, show, fun and good music.

Setlist Kissin’ Dynamite:

Intro + No one dies a Virgin

I’ve got the Fire

Sex is war

Love me Hate me

Only the dead

Livin in the Fastlane

What goes up

Scars

Intro + Yoko Ono

Ecstasy

I will be King

DNA

Six Feet Under

You’re not Alone

Not the End

Coming Home

Colours

Saturday, April 9th, 2022: The second evening at Weinheim’s Café Central also had a lot to offer. Infected Rain from Moldova and Dagoba from France started their “Ecdysis by Night Tour” through Europe and quickly brought in Once Awake from Norway as reinforcements.

Once Awake:
They came from Bergen in Norway and opened the program with a very interesting mixture of Groove Metal and Metalcore. The fate of the first band, which hardly anyone knows, is usually not easy, but the five gentlemen mastered the challenge really confidently. Everyone gave full throttle and obviously had a lot of fun performing in front of an already well-filled hall. A more than worthy start of a very likeable band.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] Dagoba:
Second was Dagoba from Marseille, France. The group of four had their brand new album “By Night” with them and from the first second they really wanted to perform. Singer Shawter knew how to heat up the crowd, which had just as much fun as the band on stage. The mixture of groove and industrial metal was well received and celebrated in the form of moshpit and wall of death. It didn’t matter whether it was a new song or an old classic, it turned into an outstanding party.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] Infected Rain:
Then it was time for the main act: the Metalcore Shooting Stars from Moldova around frontwoman Lena Scissorhands entered the stage. Like their French colleagues before them, Infected Rain had a new album in their luggage. “Ecdysis” was released at the beginning of January and now, after a postponement, is finally on a release tour. Although the sound sometimes seemed a bit overdriven, the band put on a quite respectable performance. Here, too, a circle pit and wall of death formed, this time supported by a stage diver.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] All in all it was a really successful evening, all three bands demonstrated their live qualities and the audience was just as “On Fire”. For me personally, Once Awake were the new discovery of the evening. Confident on stage, musically high-quality and personally super likeable.

On October 16 the band Oversense was a guest at the Goldene Krone in Darmstadt. After I saw them at the end of September at the Phungo meets Metal up your Life 2021, this is now their second live show within 2 months, where I was able to see the band live and take photos of them. The concert was a 2G event, so finally the audience was able to moshing, make circle pits etc. without any distancing. And they did during the show of all three bands. Due to the concept of the Krone, at the same time a techno / pop party was occuring one floor below. From there, attracted by the music, people kept coming up to see the bands. And some stayed for the respective gig and then went down again.

With Her Fall is an alternative metal from Groß-Umstadt in the region. The band jumped in at short notice, after which the actual opener had to cancel. A solid performance which was fun for both the fans and the band itself. You could tell from reactions of the audience that they longed for a normal concert. Everyone was having fun and wanted to see more With Her Fall after the set, but unfortunately there was not enough time.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] As second band on stage was one of the Krone home bands, the alternative metal band from Darmstadt, Pentastone. I was also able to see them at the Phungo Festival, right before Oversense and it was a pleasure to see them in a normal concert setting. Together with the audience, the band literally teared down the Krone. A real pleasure.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] As the concert didn’t start until 10 p.m., it was already after midnight until the headliner Oversense finally came on stage. Somehow many slept through the beginning of the concert, but then quickly streamed back into the large hall of the Krone. And it was worth it for all viewers who stayed so long. The band put on another incomparable show, including an encore to the encore, which was not actually planned, but was pulled through because of the fans. For this, Danny left his guitar and rocked the stage with just his microphone.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] To finish off, here a little outlook, you can see Pentastone on the 19th of November in Augsburg as a support band for Kalaska, tickets are available here. And on the 26th of November they play again at the Krone, where Kalaska then appears as support, together with the band Red Veil from Offenbach. I will be there again and provide you with pictures and a short report afterwards.

Oversense will also play three more shows this year, all three as the opening act for nobody other than Doro Pesch. On the 17th of November in Frankfurt in the Batschkapp, on the 27th of November in Neuruppin at the Kulturhaus and as the end of the tour on November the 28th in Hamburg in the location called Gruenspan.

Setlist Pentastone:

Finally, on the 13th of August 2021, I went to a concert for the first time for almost a year. The last one was the Metal Up Your Life 10 at the Oettinger Villa in october 2020. And fate decided, that it was again a Metal Up Your Life. This time it was the Phungo meets Metal up your Life 2021, as part of the small, but very nice Phungo Festival at the old swimming pool of Pfungstadt. The doors opened at 18:30 and at 19:00 the young band Pentastone opened the festivities. For them finally the first concert since the release of their first album. And what a show it was. The band showed, that they missed the stage and they had a lot of fun. 45 minutes later everybody was awake and ready for the rest of the evening.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] After a short intermission Oversense entered the stage. I did not yet hear a single song nor saw them live, until now. I only knew them from the collaboration between their singer Danny with the band Snow White Blood on their album Hope Springs Eternal. But during the concert I realized, that this was an error. Great band with a great show. For them it also was the first concert since the start of the pandemic and they had a lot of fun. All the energy which was held back during that time was released this evening and that transfered to the audience. Very cool show.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] Third band of the evening was the local band ALL WILL KNOW, which is also the band of the organizer of the evening, Jan Jansohn. I made an interview with them some days before the concert, so I was really looking forward to be able see them again performing on stage. The expectations where fulfilled. Lots of energie, fun to play and intoxicating music was played. Of course they played an encore of some songs. It was clear, that the audience missed real good live performances and was famished for it. All three bands till this point passionately gave them what they wanted and needed.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] Last but not least was The Tex Avery Syndrome playing their set. They are a Modern Metal Band from Frankfurt, with core influences. The band presented a very impressive light show, which was really cool from the perspective of a concertgoer, but not so good from the perspective of a photographer. Combined with that was very heavy music which induced to dance. Even tho the fans where not allowed to do this before the stage, due to anti-corona measures, but only before their deck chair. But they had a lot of fun doing so and the correct vibe did arise. As the band had to stop playing at 23:30 and not a minute later due to restrictions by the city, they did not play the normal “We go off the stage, wait for the audience to shout encore, come back and play” game, but simply stayed on stage and directly played the encore. That way they kept to the end time.

[See image gallery at catchingmovement.de] In summary it simply was a fantastic evening, which made a lot of fun and showed that a good metal concert can be made, even if anti-corona measures. Also the combination of the different bands was very good, with a good mixture of different metal styles.
